T-Bot & Peabody Explore Series

T-Bot & Peabody Explore the Ocean

"I see it in his face, he's struggling to read. He's missing the details. He's not having fun. Worst of all, he's beginning to shutdown." said Chris. "I see him stuck in this downward spiral. Without reading well, he's missing the facts, and without the facts his struggle spills over to other subjects."

I listened as patiently as I could, but couldn't hear any more of it. I had the same problem with some of my 2nd grade boys until I found the T-Bot and Peabody Explore Series. The kids seem to really like the books and there is so much important information chunked out into graphs and charts that my struggling readers have an easy time finding out what's important and we work together to make sure they can read and comprehend it.

I highly recommend the work of children's authors Jonathan D. Fluck and Karen Fluck to parents and teachers of elementary school children. Creative and engaging informational stories T-Bot and Peabody Explore the Ocean as well as T-Bot and Peabody Explore the Zoo lead readers on adventures as they are guided by two robot brothers. The variety of text features build readers' word and world knowledge in ways that support comprehension. In addition to the rich language of the texts, key information is chunked and displayed in easy to read charts that accompany real photographs. My students love both books and they have been inspired to further investigate the topics and write about them. For anyone looking for a text that embodies the Common Core State Standards key areas (use of academic language, evidence, informational reading, multitextual experience, and broadening of oral language skills).

About The Authors

Karen Fluck I have always enjoyed writing. Being able to write well, helps the writer train their minds to organize, prioritize, connect thoughts, and convey emotions. It is very exciting to have the opportunity to write.

Jonathan Fluck In high school and college I read a lot. In high school, I loved fiction and enjoyed reading but had a passion for computers and math. I attended Drexel University and graduated with a degree in Computer Engineering. My reading switched from fiction to nonfiction. When Karen and I began writing nonfiction I was thrilled to be able to write nonfiction for children. I have long believed that nonfiction was never given a fair shake. No one thinks it can be fun. The T-Bot and Peabody Explore series is my tool to show kids how fun facts can be!

How It All Got Started

It all started with a bedtime story. One night our oldest son asked for a bedtime story, so Karen and I threw together a few characters and a few of his interests and eventually came up with the first book of our T-Bot and Peabody Explore series.

What pushed these stories from bedtime stories to print? After spending hours in several bookstores, we discovered much to the disappointment of our oldest son, that narrative nonfiction is very hard to come by. Furthermore Karen, an elementary teacher, supported the need for books like this when she mentioned the difficulty she has when finding these books for research projects in the classroom.
